SUMMARY:Vigil: World Premiere Presented by Arts House April 22 – May 3
DESCRIPTION:VIGIL is a new theatre work of scale by Outer Urban Projects that challenges how we navigate the world and who feels safe in it. \nAt its heart\, VIGIL asks the questions: What lives matter? Do our lives matter? It brings together visionary artists and communities to map the fault lines of belonging\, race\, gender and terror in the city’s everyday spaces. \nSet on a tram moving through a city\, VIGIL sees some passengers haunted by war\, exile and uprising. While others are on their way to a good night out on the town. They draw us into a place both personal and political. \nVIGIL boasts a compelling creative team: playwrights Bryan Andy\, Kush Kuiy\, Sahra Davoudi\, Samah Sabawi and Patricia Cornelius. \nThe work is led by director and composer Irine Vela\, with choreography by Tara Jade Samaya\, an exceptional cast of actors\, dance artists\, musicians\, designers and the El Amal Arabic speaking women’s ensemble from Banksia Gardens Community Services. \nThe experience of many of the artists anchors the work\, linking it to global histories of persecution and resistance\, including those connected to South Sudan\, Iran and Palestine. VIGIL is also grounded in Australia’s First Nations history and truth. \nOuter Urban Projects Artistic Director Irine Vela says\, “VIGIL is a collective homage to real acts of loss\, of protest and our impulse to honour lives that have been forgotten.” \nArts House Head of Programming Naomi Velaphi said VIGIL emphasises Outer Urban Projects commitment to ambitious\, socially engaged and multidisciplinary art. \n“VIGIL is an expansive and courageous project that bridges film\, performance and community practice. It invites audiences to think about safety\, risk\, empathy and complicity in ways that resonate far beyond the theatre\,” Velaphi said. \nA free film installation featuring the award-winning short dance film VIGIL is presented alongside the live performance at Arts House. \nProduced by Outer Urban Projects and directed by Pippa and Tara Jade Samaya (the Samaya Wives)\, with an original score by Irine Vela\, the film traces the ripple effects of gender-based violence through immersive imagery and sound. It offers a behind-the-scenes glimpse into how the film was conceived and made. \nSpread the love

SUMMARY:Dublin: Tales of a City by the Sea
DESCRIPTION:Part of the The Five Lamps Arts Festival 2026 collection \nA staged reading featuring Palestinian performers\, music\, choreography\, and visual elements that bring this powerful work to life. \n\n\n\n\nTales of a City by the Sea by Samah Sabawi is a deeply moving love story that reveals the lives of ordinary people in the besieged Gaza Strip before\, during and after its bombardment in the winter of 2008–2009. The play follows Jomana\, a Palestinian woman living in the Shati (Beach) refugee camp in Gaza\, who falls in love with Rami\, an American-born doctor and activist of Palestinian descent who arrives on the first Free Gaza boats in 2008. \nExploring the relationship between Palestinians in the diaspora and those living under occupation\, the play is also a powerful story of human survival\, resilience and tenacity. \nSamah Sabawi is an award-winning Palestinian playwright\, poet\, scholar\, and political commentator whose work weaves art and resistance into powerful expressions of identity\, memory\, and hope. \nThis staged reading includes Palestinian actors\, musicians and performers who are part of Palestinian Cultural Days Dublin\, alongside choreography\, staging and visual elements\, offering audiences an immersive and emotionally resonant experience of this significant work. \nMore information about the collective: palestinianculturaldaysdublin.com \nWriter: Samah Sabawi\nDirector: Joe O’Byrne\nMusic: Brian Keegan\nChoreography: Katerina Kaniamou \n“Sabawi has created an enthralling landscape and peopled it with believable characters. It looks beyond the political to examine the effect of war on those who cannot leave the battleground. It’s a gripping piece of theatre that begs to be seen and heard.”\nAdelaide Theatre Guide \nAll proceeds from this event will go to the Palestine Children’s Relief Fund (PCRF) – a nonprofit that provides free medical care and humanitarian aid to children in the Middle East. \n\n\nSpread the love

DESCRIPTION:Event description\n\nTicket price: \nFull $35 \nconcession/unwaged/First Nations/Palestinian/Syrian $15 \nWhat is a revolution\, exactly? Where and how does it begin\, and\, perhaps more importantly\, how does it end? This event is not the usual story of revolution: one of Kings and Generals\, grand military or revolutionary acts\, Che Guevara or Ahmed al-Sharaa style military fatigues and the storming of the capital. Rather\, this event is about small “r”  revolution and revolutionary acts done by “ordinary” people in extraordinary times. \nHosted by the Jewish Council of Australia and chaired by Dr Louise Olliff\, join panelists Dr Samah Sabawi\, Louna Ghawi and Dr Marika Sosnowski as they discuss revolution in Palestine\, Syria and beyond. \nBrunswick Bound will be selling Marika’s new book 58 Facets: on law\, violence and revolution (MUP) and Samah’s award-winning book Cactus Pear for My Beloved (Penguin) at the event. All profits from book sales on the night will go to Palestine Australia Relief and Action and the Karam Foundation. \n— \nDr Samah Sabawi is a Palestinian Australian author\, playwright and poet. Her memoire Cactus Pear for My Beloved (2024) was shortlisted for the 2025 Stella Prize\, The Age Book of the Year award and the NSW Literary Awards. Sabawi’s theatre credits include the critically acclaimed and award winning plays Tales of a City by the Sea (2016) and THEM (2019). \n  \nLouna Ghawi is a Syrian Australian leader and influential voice in the humanitarian and advocacy space. She has over 15 years of experience across the humanitarian\, corporate\, and academic sectors in Australia and in conflict-affected regions\, including her work with the United Nations in Syria. \n  \nDr Marika Sosnowski is a legal anthropologist at Melbourne Law School and the granddaughter of Polish and Dutch Holocaust survivors. She went to Syria in 2007\, primarily to eat makdous\, hummus and ghazl al banat\, and has worked on Syria – its revolution\, war\, governance and legal systems – ever since. \n  \nDr Louise Olliff is a senior research associate at the Kaldor Centre for International Refugee Law at UNSW and a senior policy advisor at the Refugee Council of Australia. Her research and work focuses on refugee policy\, diasporas and everyday humanitarianism. Through the use of humor\, laughter\, and song\, THEM transports audiences into the extraordinary circumstances that reveal their shared humanity and the ordinary moments that shape their lives. Sabawi says\, “Any of us could be them. Our lives\, even in tragic moments\, have moments of humanity and humor and love and kindness… I wrote THEM to bring the music\, the humor\, and love as well as the horrific reality of life in a war zone.” The play\, written in 2015\, was in response to the heightening anti-immigrant tensions she witnessed while living in Finland and Australia. “The divisive ‘us’ and ‘them’ dehumanizing discourse is prevalent in many western liberal nations\,” Sabawi says.\n\nTHEM is directed by University of Oregon Theatre Arts Professor Malek Najjar\, who has been awarded the 2025 University of Oregon Presidential Fellow in Arts Award and the James F. Miller Artistic Development Fund for Faculty in Theatre Arts. Najjar\, who is an award-winning director and scholar who focuses his artistic practice and scholarship on Arab American and Middle Eastern American Theatre\, chose to produce and direct THEM as his response to the rising anti-immigrant\, anti-Middle Eastern sentiment he has witnessed since the last U.S. presidential election. “We are facing unprecedented attacks on artistic expression\, academic freedom\, and immigrants in this country\,” Najjar says. “THEM is an attempt to give value to the lives of those who are suffering in wars and conflicts that are funded and perpetuated by western powers that have turned a blind eye to the plight of millions of innocent civilians who are dying every day.”\n\nThe play features Portland-based actor Dré Slaman\, and Eugene-based actors Zayne Clayton\, Akash Dhruva\, Manny Rojas Meza\, and Trevor Tarantino. Live music will be performed by “Acoustic Pilgrims” aka Wayne and Denise Gilbertson. Tickets are available at https://blogs.uoregon.edu/them/ Tickets will also be sold at the door one hour before curtain at each venue.\nSpread the love

SUMMARY:Headland Writers Festival 2025 Launch Palestinian-Australian writer Samah Sabawi In Conversation with Linda Mottram
DESCRIPTION:“If there’s a more important or timely book in 2024\, I’m yet to come across it. Five big shiny stars.”\nGood Reading Magazine\n \nIn July 1967\, forty-day-old Samah was carried out of Gaza\, Palestine\, in her mother’s arms in search of her father who had escaped to Jordan – somewhere. Fifty-six years later\, she’s an author\, playwright\, poet\, journalist and recipient of multiple national and international awards. \nSamah will discuss her book Cactus Pear for My Beloved\, which has been short-listed for the Stella Literature prize\, NSW Literary award and The Age Book of the Year. This is part of her Far South Coast tour on her way to present at the Sydney Writers Festival. \nCactus Pear for My Beloved follows the journey of Samah’s family over the past hundred years starting in Gaza under British rule and ending in Redland Bay\, Queensland. Her parents were born as their parents were being forced to leave their homeland in Gaza. \nFilled with love for land\, history and its peoples\, Cactus Pear for My Beloved is more than anything else a family story and love story told with optimism\, humanity and feeling. It reminds us that the call of home and land remains strong\, and that belief in words\, art\, family and community can help you rise from poverty and exile into a fulfilling life. \nAnd yet history repeats itself. As Samah put the finishing touches on this story\, another war on Gaza began – one unlike any other the city had experienced. Those in her family who had remained in Gaza have now all lost their homes. Much of the landscape described in the book has now turned to scorched earth. \nThis is both the personal story of a family\, and the collective story of Palestine. Can Gaza rise again? History tells us it will – and Samah wants to believe it too. \nSamah will talk about the process of writing the book and her other projects\, reflecting on how decisions are made about the literary form of her works. Cactus Pear for My Beloved for example\, was born as a result of Samah’s PhD research into post-memory within the context of generational trauma and exile. \nAdditionally \nHer most recent visit to Gaza was in July 2023 where she visited family and reconnected with important geographical sites and landmarks. Then in October\, war erupted again and now most of what she saw has been erased. Her remaining family in Gaza have also been forced to leave. Gaza has endured three major wars in the time Samah wrote this book. She is also helping settle Palestinian refugees who have been able to get to Australia. Samah has just returned from overseas where she was collecting testimonies of Palestinian women who managed to escape from Gaza. \n  \n\n← Back Thank you for your response. ✨\n\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n\n\nName(required)\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n	\n\n\nEmail(required)\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n	\n\n\nWebsite\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n	\n\n\nMessage\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n	\n	\n\n \n \n \n Submit \n \n \n \nΔ \n\nSpread the love
